Titus 1:10

Titus 1:10

“For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,” – Titus 1:10

Within the church congregation, there are “many”. It would be interesting to know what Paul considered to be ‘many’, more than half?

“insubordinate” – ‘that cannot be subjected to control, disobedient, unruly, refractory’. There seems to always be those who cannot be apart of the team, who want to be in control, and not under the control of others. Perhaps they have had bad experiences with leadership in the past? Perhaps, they don’t think a leader has the best ways and ideas unless it is ‘their’ ideas and ways?

“idle talkers” – ‘an idle talker, one who utters empty senseless or mischievous things’. What kind of things did Paul consider ‘senseless’? What took place during the week? Who won what game? Talking about the weather? Or what did Paul consider ‘mischievous’, was this gossip?

“deceivers” – ‘a mind deceiver, a seducer’ their goal is to lead people away after something. Is Paul talking purely spiritual? or Physically?

And these are especially of the “circumcision” – these are those who should know better as they grew up with the “truth” so to speak.

An application:

As an “overseer”, Paul lists three things to be on guard for, insubordinate, idle talkers, deceivers. Lord, help me to be able to ‘see’ these three things, and with Your wisdom address these things in Your Church.
