Titus 1:3

Titus 1:3

“but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior;” – Titus 1:3

In the previous text, we see that Paul has stated that our hope of eternal life has been promised since before the world began by a God who cannot lie. But how does this message of hope of eternal life get shared, become known?

“in due time”

This is the same expression as “the fullness of the time” in (Galatians 4:4)

“manifested His word through preaching”

God’s word is “manifested” – which according to Strongs means ‘to make visible or known what has been hidden or unknown’. But how is God’s word to be made visible? Through preaching!

Preaching – again from Strongs means ‘proclaimed by a herald or public crier’. This is the channel through which the message is shared.

“committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior”

Again Paul is clear on his purpose of being sent as a delegate (apostle) his work is one of proclamation. And what is he proclaiming? the word of God. But in the context of verse 2, that would seem to be connected to “the hope of eternal life”, “promised before the world began”, “by a God who cannot lie”.

“commandment”

The call to preach is not a decision Paul made on his own, but rather a command.

“God our Savior”

Here Paul refers to God as our Saviour. Profound. Not only was the promise made by God before the world began that we would have eternal life, but that same God is, in fact, our Saviour. Why then should any be lost? “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) the key lies in responding to the ‘preaching’ that we are called to believe!

An application:

I ought to preach when commanded by God, the message ought to be centred on God the Saviour who has promised eternal life before the world began, and He cannot lie.
