Titus 1:9

Titus 1:9

“holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.” – Titus 1:9

The bishop must hold fast to the word

The bishop has been taught and this is what he holds fast to

The bishop needs to be able to “exhort” to call to himself (one’s side) and “convict” tell a fault, to rebuke, or to reprove you.

The bishop needs to be able to deal with those who “contradict” – dispute, refuse: — answer again, contradict.

An application:

As an “overseer”, we must be taught sound doctrine. then we must hold fast to it. I must know who I am and what I believe before I can be one who oversees. As an overseer, I am looking to exhort (call people to my side, to encourage) and to convict (to tell them of their faults).
