Titus 2:4

Titus 2:4

“that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,” – Titus 2:4

In the previous verse, Paul has told Titus what to instruct the ‘older women’ in ‘reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things’.

“that they admonish the young women” – Now in this verse, Paul does something interesting. With the third group of people ‘young women,’ he tells Titus to instruct the ‘older women’ to ‘admonish’ or ‘instruct’ the young women. Titus will not be instructing these young women, but he through the older women will instruct them. This is interesting, this shows that Titus (being a young man himself, and probably a single young man) will not actually interface directly with these young women. This is good counsel, in order to keep Titus and the young women guarded against any appearance of evil or keep them from any unnecessary danger of temptation.

This is to be a personal work of older women. It would be a matter requiring a lot of time and patience, and would, as observed, rather follow as the result of patient individual effort and holy example. This training or ‘schooling’ is not going to come from a sermon – but by example.

“to love their husbands” – why would a woman need to be taught how to love their husband?

“to love their children”– why would a woman need to be taught how to love their children?

An application:

As an “overseer”, I pray that I will have the wisdom and influence needed with the older women, in order to instruct the younger woman. Help me to understand what this looks like and how to best accomplish your purposes in providing this training to our young women in our churches. Amen.
